Marathon County(WAOW)— Gigi’s Playhouse Wausau is promoting “Down Syndrome Awareness Day” with Jeans for Genes. The fundraiser asks local employers to offer employees to wear jeans for a day for 5$, and donate the proceeds to local non-profit.
“Down Syndrome Awareness Day” is celebrated on March 21. Its significance comes from the fact that Down Syndrome occurs when there is a third copy of the 21st chromosome.
All money raised goes to provide services to community members with Down Syndrome, as well as promote conversation around acceptance.
“And its really truly about changing the perception people have of an individual with down syndrome. Changing how that delivery of that diagnosis is given. So, instead of sorry, say congratulations,” said Erica Erdman, President of Gigi’s Playhouse Wausau.
On the night of March 21, Texas Road House in Wausau will offer a dine in fundraising event where 10 percent of all food purchased will be donated to the organization during the hours of 3:30 PM to 10:30 PM. A flyer must be presented to ensure the donation.
