The past two years have been like no other for the Fighting Cardinals: A championship title in 2017 and a semi-final run in 2018.

“Just take it one day at a time and one game at a time,” said Head Coach Paul Michlig.

And they’re hoping this season will be just as impressive.

“Get ready. I’m hoping it’s a good season this year and I’m definitely ready myself,” said Joseph Stephan, a tight end with the Cardinals.

Their focus during the offseason is what they believe will get them there.

“Bring your own energy. That’s our motto. We call it BYOE . It’s one of our main breakdowns,” Stephan said.

Newman has lost some seniors that made a big impact, but the coaching staff is confident in the guys that will fill those holes.

“We feel that we have a good senior class and we want to make sure that we build upon what these past two classes have left. And keep building off the success that they’ve come, but it’s just a progress, a journey. Life’s a journey and we just take one day at a time. It’s more than just football. If you don’t enjoy they process than you’re not appreciating what high school athletics is about,” Michlig said.

The Cardinals have a tough season opener against Oakfield this Friday. But Coach Michlig says playing the best will only help them improve.

“To be the man, you have to beat the man, so we feel like, you know, you want to play the best teams and that’s how you get better. Iron sharpens iron.”
