It’s the first day of camp for the Pointers football team and after a 4-6 season, the expectations are high.
“Ultimately it starts with practice #1 and how we do that, so we’re focused on today and we’re going to be where are feet are, but obviously this is a season where everyone is 0-0 and anyone can win on any given weekend and we anticipate that to be us,” head coach Greg Breitbach said.
The motto in camp thus far: getting one percent better everyday and building a team one day at a time.
“It’s not the best collection of athletes that wins games, it’s the best team and we need to learn how to play team football and that starts with the offense playing off the defense and special teams playing off the offense,” Breitbach said.
Breitbach has stressed that everyone has a role; from the freshman on the roster to the seniors, it starts with the next man up mentality.
“If somebody goes down, you have to have somebody that’s ready to step up right there,” safety Sam Shafer said. “It’s just working hard in practice, taking it week by week and game by game.”
As for the quarterback competition, Breitbach knows he can find success with more than one.
“We have two guys that have a great amount of experience, guys that have played in games and guys that have had success,” Breitbach said. “I’ve seen very few football seasons in my 27 years, where you don’t need more than one quarterback.”
The Pointers enter the season with unity, a sense of comfort and confidence.
