The Newman Catholic baseball team entered the 2019 season looking to break bad patterns.
The first goal on the list was to eradicate an entire season filled with losses.
The Cardinals took care of that problem in the first game of the year with an 11-4 win over Columbus Catholic.
Newman catcher Ben Bates is also ending long droughts. Throughout his baseball career, the junior never hit a home run. Bates did more than that on Friday. The catcher hit three, three-run homers against Abbotsford/Colby.
“Coach has been saying, ‘you know you don’t have to try to get a homer, it’ll come; just swing the bat and when you hit the ball right it will go flying.’ Personally, that made me a little more confident,” Bates said. “Every time I go up to bat, I am hoping, not exactly for a home run, but to help my teammates and be the best I can, on and off the field.”
Unfortunately, that game was called at a 19-19 tie due to a lack of light outside. The game will resume Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
