This weeks Athlete of the Week is Jasmine Yang, a varsity golfer from Wausau West High School.
Yang won two different meets so far in the years Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Golf Tournament.
“It was great,” Yang said. “It was a great feeling and I’m happy it paid off.”
She won Leg 3 by shooting a 39 on September 10, 2019 at Stevens Point Country Club earning her team 15 points towards the tournament. She also won Leg 4 three days later at Ridges Golf Course, where she shot a 42. This also earned her team another 15 points. Despite her success, she isn’t happy with her performances.
“She shot a 39 the other day and was like ‘coach I could have done better. There were three shots that I…’,” Wausau West/East Girls Golf Head Coach Lisa Peck said. “I’m like Jasmine that’s phenomenal. Great job.”
Besides her talent and skills, Yang’s main praise on the golf course is her mentality.
“The thing about golf is that mental golf is the most important thing,” Yang said. “If you don’t have it, then you’re going to have a lot of trouble on the course.”
“The one thing that Jasmine has improved the most this year is the mental part of her golf game,” Peck said. “Last year, a bad shot or bad hole might lead to two or three bad holes. This year, those bad shots, she overcomes.”
No matter what she shot on the course though, she always puts her teammates first.
“The other thing I really enjoy about Jasmine is, when she’s done with her round, she just turns around and is right back out on the course with her teammates,” Peck said. “Trying to get them to do their best and encourage them as they come in and finish their rounds.”
