Columbus Catholic’s Comeback Comes up Short in D5 Championship Game

Despite a gargantuan comeback effort in the second half of Saturday’s state championship game, the Columbus Catholic Dons came up just short against the Sheboygan Area Lutheran Crusaders.

The Dons fell behind early as the Crusaders opened up the game on a 9-0 run thanks to big plays by Jacob Ognacevic. Columbus Catholic would fight back, but another late rally saw them head into the locker room down by 18.

The Crusaders would remain keep a comfortable lead until late in the second half, as the Dons tried to mount a comeback for the ages.

Trailing by 13 with three minutes left to play, Columbus Catholic tried to furiously rally behind the three point shooting of senior Jarred Mandel and the hero of Friday’s semi-final game Tom Nystrom.

The Dons would get as close as four with under one minute left, but the dominant play of Ognacevic, who racked up 35 points in the game, would prove to be too much, as the Crusaders pulled ahead to win it 77-69.

You can check out some of the action from the game in the video above.
