The boys state tournament begins this Thursday with only one area team alive fighting to become a state champion… The Columbus Catholic Dons.

The Dons enter the Division 5 bracket as the #2 seed and will face the defending state champion Bangor Cardinals on Friday at 10:45 A.M.

“Well it’s exciting,” Don’s Head Coach Joe Konieczny said.

“I think the community is very excited to get to go back to Madison to watch our team play at the Kohl’s Center, it’s a special thing.  It’s something we got a taste of 2 years ago with a special group. Last year we made it back to the sectional final, lost by 1, so this year there’s definitely an appreciation we get to go back.”

Several players from that team that lost in 2017 are still on the roster and hope this trip to Madison yields better results.

“We’re grateful, I think that’s the word we’ve used a lot is grateful,” Konieczny said.

“Not a lot of schools get this opportunity. We have some players that are going for the second time, so we’re extremely grateful and appreciative and we plan to attack it with our best effort.”
