Al Capone’s niece speaks at Merrill High School

MERILL (WAOW)– One of the last known immediate relatives of Al Capone was in Merrill Tuesday evening.

Deirdre Marie Capone, 79, is the niece of the man who at one time was known as “Public Enemy #1.”

She talked about how she had to hide her family name and she was ever fired after six months at an insurance company because of what her last name.

“He was a business man and my grandfather worked along side of him and they were businessmen. They ran a very efficient and good business with top rated alcohol and beer and nobody ever got sick drinking any of the things they manufactured,” Deirdre said.

She is also the author of the book Uncle Al Capone.
