Central Wisconsin (WAOW) — Officials are warning residents to beware of scammers. They say it happens every time there’s natural disasters, scammers will be out trying to take advantage of people.

The Better Business Bureau says contractors could be out trying to scam people.

They say if someone approaches your home, do your research and don’t make any decisions right away. They also say to check references and ask your insurance company or the Better Business Bureau before moving forward.

“You want to be able to gather some information, know you that person is at your door, pay attention to the vehicles parked outside, do they have signage, can you see the license plate, is it a Wisconsin license plate, ask for a business card,” says Lisa Schiller with the Better Business Bureau in Wisconsin.
Schiller says they haven’t had any complaints about contractor scammers from this latest storm, but that could change. She says it often takes people weeks to come forward, and by that time it’s usually too late.
