WAUSAU (WAOW)– The Public Health and Safety Committee passed an revised version of a pet ordinance.

Dozens of animals are not allowed to be kept as pets including bears and elephants. Residents will also not be allowed to keep foxes as pets.

Some amphibians, reptiles and sugar gliders are allowed to be kept as pets under the new ordinance.

“We’ve also created a permit process so that if people are in possession of a snake of a certain length that they could secure a permit to keep that animal just so that the environment that it’s kept in is safe and that the public at large surrounding it is safe,” Lisa Rasmussen, the Chairperson of the Public Health and Safety Committee said.

The ordinance will be voted on by the full common council in their meeting on June 11. The list of animals not allowed and the final draft of the ordinance can be found here.
