WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — The fifth and final Beyond the Headlines event took place at Northcentral Technical College Wednesday evening.
Panelists and attendees discussed the role of news media in informing the public and protecting democracy.
They also discussed expectations placed on local government, law enforcement and the media.
A poll taken during the event showed that, among the attendees, there is an expectation that news media and law enforcement collaborate to ensure citizens are accurately informed.
The Wausau City Council president, who attended the all of the Beyond the Headlines events, said the series has been beneficial.
“It’s just really brought out, I think, some of the best conversations our community could have and really important ones.” said Lisa Rasmussen, who served as a panelist for the event. “And I hope that they don’t end with the end of the project. This project’s been going on for six months, but I really hope that conversations in the community continue.”
News 9’s general manager Curtis Miles was also a panelist Wednesday. He and Rassmussen joined Everest Metro Police Chief Clayton Schultz and moderator Rick Reyer of Wisconsin Public Radio..
News 9 served as a proud sponsor of all five Beyond the Headlines events.
