A local veteran receives a new furnace just in time for the cold

WESTON, Wis. (WAOW) — Despite the cold temperature, things were heating up in Weston at the Garrity’s as Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 434 took an old and broken furnace and replaced it with a brand new on, free of charge.

“I’m a vet with 6 years with the Coast Guard and 4 years with the Army National Guard,” said Jim Garrity.

Garrity  found ways to salvage his old furnace for years until he and his wife couldn’t anymore.

Since their furnace broke, Garrity and his wife were using their oven and two heaters to keep warm.

After receiving quote after quote, being told that a new furnace would cost $6,000,  Garrity gave up until he heard of Project Heat’s Up.

“It’s a couple thousand dollars at minimum to have it professionally done so we cover the cost for the furnace and all materials,” said Mitch Runge, a business agent for Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 434.

The furnace came just in time. “I didn’t expect anything like it,” said Garrity.

Although Garrity is humbled by the gift he says he and his wife look forward to staying toasty this winter.
