The Future of Fox Theater

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WAOW) — A raze order from Stevens Point means Fox Theater on Main will need to be up to code by October 20 or get torn down.

Fortunately, Create Portage County plans to revamp the building with a new innovation center. Unfortunately, that will cost $3.5 million. The non-profit has raised $1 million of that in just two months.

But what exactly does an innovation center mean for the community?

Crate Executive Director Greg Wright said it’s, “for anyone in the community doing creative projects, be it art projects, vision projects, or community impact projects… Then we use our resources to support those projects to move them faster towards success.”

So far, Wright said, Create Portage County has helped start fifty new businesses in their temporary space.

They aim to help even more, as they focus on a new space at Fox Theater.

The non-profit received the building through a donation. Wright said the key issue they need to address is the roof. Right now, it’s broken and leaking water throughout the building.

Eventually, they plan to renovate the entire building, only keeping the classic exterior that faces Main Street.
