GREEN BAY (WKOW) — The Packers will welcome the Houston Texans to Green Bay this week for joint practices, the first time since 2005 that thePackers have hosted another team for practices during Training Camp.
The practices will take place at 10:15 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, and Tuesday, Aug. 6, ahead of the preseason matchup on Aug. 8. The Texans will begin practice on Clarke Hinkle Field, on the west side of the Don Hutson Center, before joining the Packers on Ray Nitschke Field on the east side of the Don Hutson Center for the joint portion of each practice, according to a Packers’ news release.
To ensure the Texans players experience one of the most storied training camp traditions in the NFL, kids of all fan affiliations are encouraged to bring their bikes to Lambeau Field to offer rides to the Texans and Packers alike during the two days of practice. Every Texans player will be riding a bike to practice if there are enough bikes available, so fans and community members are asked to welcome the team in true Green Bay fashion.
Among the players to take advantage of the bike ride was Texans defensive end, JJ Watt, a Pewaukee native who played in college for the Badgers.
“As a kid, I grew up, and I went to Green Bay Packers training camp, and I watched the kids ride the bikes. I stood outside in the parking lot asking for autographs, and I watched them throw balls and play and practice football for a living. I looked through that fence, and I thought that was the coolest job in the whole world,” Watt told the Houston Chronicle.
To offer a ride to the Texans, kids are asked to line up with their bikes near the visitor’s locker room door, located adjacent to the South Gate on the south end of Lambeau Field off of Valley View Road. Riders can line up as early as 8 a.m., but are asked to be in place by 9:15 for the Texans to make their way to practice.
A bike corral will be set up to guide kids and players from the locker room door as they travel east, through the Lambeau Field parking lot and across Oneida Street. Texans players will enter the practice field through a gate in the fence surrounding Clarke Hinkle Field.
During practice, kids can line their bikes up against the fence to wait for the end of practice, when they will be able to offer their bikes for the Texans players exiting through the gate to ride back to the locker room.
To ensure a smooth and safe ride to practice, Oneida Street will be closed to traffic between Lombardi Avenue and Mike McCarthy Way from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both practice days. Visitors should know that Packers players will continue to ride bikes, as well, with normal operations taking place on DreamDrive outside the Oneida Nation Gate.
