STEVENS POINT Wis. (WAOW) — Looking for a place to stay for vacation isn’t always easy because hotel rooms fill up fast.

“Stevens point and the Stevens point area have been setting records in tourism for several years already,” said Mayor Mike Wiza, Stevens Point.

And while hotels are always an option for a place to stay, now homeowners in Stevens Point can offer their homes up as an Airbnb or VRBO short term rental.

On Thursday, Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza announced the city has completed the process to allow short term rental options.

This mainstream option is now offered in Stevens Point with the hopes to bring more tourists to the area.

“I had a guest room that was open and I have traveled using Airbnb a lot in the past and I had a really great experience so I thought I would give it a try,” said Ariel Welling of Stevens Point.

At first, Welling didn’t think her house would get much attention. She said, “its a small room with a shared bathroom, I thought who’s going to come to Stevens Point and want to stay here.” But to her surprise, she was overwhelmed with the number of people who were interested in renting.

She said she loves the renters and plans to continue with Airbnb.

This will give frequent travelers who want to escape a typical hotel room a chance to stay somewhere that feels more like home.

“I’ve had people who have come through who travel for work and have traveled for work for a long time and just got sick of the same old same old in a hotel,” said Welling.

If you’re interested in renting out your home head to stevenspoint.com search short term rentals and follow the instructions.
