Emergency rooms feel impact of blood shortage

(WAOW) — The American Red Cross is experiencing a critical shortage of Type O blood, urging donors to give now.

The Red Cross says it has less than a two-day supply of Type O blood type available for emergency rooms, where the blood type is used most often.

In the US, only seven percent of the population has Type O negative blood, but it is a crucial type due to its ability to be transfused to patients with any blood type.

The local Red Cross representatives understand blood shortages happen often, but it is the expectation of never running out that keeps them persistent.

“It’s like going to a grocery store and not seeing milk on the shelf. Well, what happened? That’s our expectation, that whatever we need, will be there — but it’s a lot of work behind the scenes.”

Currently the American Red Cross is offering a $5 Amazon Gift Card as an incentive to all donors through June 10.

On Friday, a blood drive is located at Kocourek Imports (1501 Morning Glory Lane in Wausau) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The next opportunity in Wausau is June 14 at the Wausau Center Mall, also from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For more information on about upcoming opportunities find the ‘American Red Cross North Central Chapter’ here.
