(WAOW) — The comedian behind the “Manitowoc Minute” encountered anything but a laughing matter this week.

According to a post on his Facebook page Friday morning, Charlie Berens announced that his grandfather, Bob Berens, died earlier in the week. He was 83.

Charlie said “Grandpa Bob” was a main inspiration behind the “Manitowoc Minute” character.

“This week Wisconsin lost a legend, but God got a fishing buddy…da Grandpa Bob,” Berens’ post read.

Berens added that Grandpa Bob was “surrounded by family” in his native town of Fond du Lac.

He also added lighthearted moments in the post, saying, “Grandpa Bob taught me life doesn’t need to be so serious. He also taught me life is too short for matching socks, and that you can wear camo to church because the priest can’t see you.”

In the post, Berens also announced he has a show scheduled in Fon du Lac on April 6, where he will include a tribute to his late grandfather — complete with “never before seen footage of taking out da dock, going to da hardware store and fixing da roof.”
