WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — Steve Ruppel completed a half marathon while wearing 60 t-shirts last May, setting a Guinness World Record.
Since then, he’s come up with a new, similar goal.
Ruppel plans to travel to Michigan this weekend to run a full marathon with all those shirts on.
He said that the 2018 endurance test was tough. His sweat soaked through 38 of the shirts, weighing him down as the day carried on.
He hopes the cooler temperatures will make for a less exhaustive experience this time.
“I mean, if you think of a third-grader strapped on to your back, choking the life out of you, wrapped in a blanket of sweat,” explained Ruppel. “And then someone pushes you outside in the winter and then says ‘run 26.2 miles.’ That’s kind of what it feels like.”
When asked why he keeps attempting record-breaking feats, Ruppel said he was fascinated by the Guinness World Record books growing up. He hopes to encourage youth in the area to achieve records in the future.
Ruppel will be accompanied by two other area athletes: Chad Esker and Keith DuPuis. They say they’ll provide humor, encouragement and water along those 26.2 miles.
