MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) — July is full of backyard barbeques, pool gatherings and of course Fourth of July fireworks and parades. But, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), July is also the deadliest month when it comes to drunk driving accidents. That’s partly due to the festivities surrounding the Fourth of July.

An official from Wisconsin State Patrol said the department definitely notices an increase in drunken driving around the holiday weekend.

“We know that the influx of traffic is going to bring the influx of drinkers too,” said Srgt. John Pederson.

The department said they expect this behavior around holidays.

If you are planning on drinking this weekend, it’s a good idea to plan for a safe ride home ahead of time.

“Pre-plan a designated driver… you have rideshare programs all over the place, you have cabs, you have Uber. Use them,” Pederson said.

Along with cabs and rideshares, like Uber and Lyft, the Tavern League SafeRide Program is also available.

He also wanted to remind drivers of general safety tips that are especially important as the roads get busier.

“Pay attention to the road, not to your cell phone, not to the radio, not to anything else,” he said.

Don’t forget to allow extra time in case you hit construction or traffic. And if you’re planning on bringing your boat out on the lake, don’t forget to double check your hook ups.
