WAUSAU (WAOW) — With Shopko set to officially close in the coming weeks, many are curious about what could be moving into the Wausau location.

Wausau Mayor Robert Mielke said he hopes the space can be filled soon, and would like to avoid an empty store front in the city.

The Scholfield Group is currently working with the property owners on bringing another business to the location at 17 ave. and Stewart ave. The group said there’s been interest from a spectrum of businesses.

“Some wonderful restaurant groups… some home, some general type of merchandising,” said Bill Scholfield of the Scholfield Group.

Scholfield said the area is easily marketable to national and state-wide companies, but he’s hoping they can find the perfect fit.

“It’s got a great daytime population… it’s quite a crossroads for the entire community,” he said.

While both the mayor and Scholfield wouldn’t say which companies they’ve been talking to, Scholfield said they’ve already Target, Costco and At Home off the list.
