RHINELANDER (WAOW) — Jennifer Marshall worked at Doctors Foster and Smith in Rhinelander for over four years. When PetCo announced it was closing the store in January, she decided to take the leap and open her own pet store.
“We would get customers coming in saying where am I going to get these things,” Marshall said. “People started saying ‘well, why don’t you do that?’ And I said ‘well maybe I could.'”
Northwoods Pets opened just last week and sells pet supplies for small animals, reptiles and fish.
Doctors Fosters and Smith had previously been one of the only stores in the area to sell specialty pet supplies. It’s closure left many in the area without the necessary supplies and food for their pets. Marshall, with several reptilian pets of her own, decided to fill that niche.
“There was this big push… to get open as soon as possible because I knew from my customers at Foster and Smith, that they were going to be running out of stuff,” she said.
Right now she doesn’t sell pets at the store, but said it could be a possibility in the future.
While it’s been exciting to start her own business, Marshall said the closing of Doctors Foster and Smith was like losing a family.
