Flooded homeowners run out of options

Wausau, Wisc. (WAOW) — Stores restocked and ran out of sump pumps before noon Friday and there’s a moratorium on flood insurance.

Dave Huth, the store manager at ACE hardware in Wausau said they ran out of sump pumps Thursday and got 20 new ones Friday morning. By noon on Friday, they were sold out again.

Elaine Simkowski was one of the lucky few to get a sump pump. “I have never seen so much water in my yard…I need an arch… But I’m getting a pump to pump water away from my house,” said Simkowski.

Sometimes the water is too much. “The sump pumps are failing. They can’t keep out the water,” said Jonnee Bauer, an insurance agent in Wausau.

And if you’re looking to get a policy, it’s too late. “The water tables are too high, there’s too much rain, there’s too much melting snow, so we are not allowed to issue those flood policies right now,” said Bauer.

The best you can do is rely on the kindness of other Wisconsinites like Michelle Ruenger, who went out Friday morning to get a dehumidifier for a friend in need. “They got the water out, now it’s just a matter of drying things up,” said Ruegner.
