WESTON, Wis. (WAOW) — Five snowmobilers died in Wisconsin over the weekend, and DNR officials are urging riders to take extra precautions before hitting the trails.

Since December, 14 fatal snowmobile crashes have happened. Eight of those took place in North Central Wisconsin.

DNR Lt. Roy Zellmer said your safety should be a top priority now more than ever.

“Generally try not to ride alone. Let people know where you’re going to be. Do some research. Know the trails that you’re riding on. Know the terrain that you’re in,” said Lt. Zellmer. “Know where the routes are at. Stay on the trails. Stay on the routes, and basically just obey the laws while you’re out there.”

Lt. Zellmer says to check your snowmobile’s throttle, gas levels and all of your lights before leaving. He also said speeding and alcohol are two main contributing factors in most crashes, so you should slow down and avoid drinking.
