WAUSAU (WAOW)— Saturday, the Wausau YWCA chapter will host a culinary experience celebrating black women scientists at the Hilton Garden Inn. Food is provided by Urban Street Bistro, with dishes from areas the scientists lived.
The event highlights nine different women from five different states and wants to educate community members of their important contributions often overlooked.
“There are a lot of really cool women of color who have done really cool stuff, that we have no idea about. Because they just get brushed into the sides and the shadows, and off the stage. We’re really excited to be able to take some time out of our day to celebrate that, during black history month,” said YWCA Executive Director, Andrea Huggenvik.
YWCA Wausau hopes people come with an open mind ready to learn some history they may never have known.
“Last year, one of our participants told us this was the best history lesson he’d ever been to,” said Huggenvik.
The Young Women’s Christian Association of Wausau has called Marathon County home since 1920. The organization’s mission is to eliminate racism and empower women; promoting peace, love, and justice for all.
The event goes from 6 PM to 8 PM. Tickets are 50$ and can be purchased here.
