MERRILL (WAOW) – The City of Merrill Finance Director was given a written warning after issues stemmed from a tax increase.

The warning, dated Jan. 7 from City Administrator David Johnson, cites unsatisfactory performance by Kathy Unertl.

Under the description of problem section, Johnson wrote, “inattention to detail and providing inaccurate information that cast city operations in an unfavorable light.”

Unertl wrote in the comments, “I am sorry that this occurred. I will redouble efforts to verify fiscal information such as budget and city communication efforts.”

Johnson said additional issues will result in “progressive discipline.”

At a Jan. 8 city council meeting, residents expressed concerns with the tax increase.

At that meeting, residents called for the firing of the finance director and city administrator.
