STEVENS POINT (WAOW)– A Portage County couple takes home a Jefferson Award for their volunteer efforts.

Rick and Eva Muzzy own three radio stations in Stevens Point.

For the past 30 years, their stations have been home to the “Christmas is for Children” project.

It provides holiday gifts to children from needy families.

“It helps nearly a thousand children every year, 30,000 children over since it started,” Rick Muzzy said.

The Muzzy stations match up listeners with the names and gift wishes of children.

Listeners then buy gifts for the kids which are distributed in Marathon, Portage and Wood Counties.

Station employee Jacquie Morton says the Muzzy’s are an inspiration and she nominated them for the award.

“They are unsung heroes and that is what the Jefferson Award is all about,” Jacquie Morton said.

Rick Muzzy says he enjoys reaching out to help others.

“I am a firm believer that is part of the reason we are here to do nice thing for other people,” Rick Muzzy said. “And everybody who does it will find out, you get as much as you give. It is amazing.”
