(PORTAGE COUNTY ) (WAOW)– With the bitter cold temperatures, area law enforcement remind motorists about the dangers of black ice.

“The road looks fine but its black ice– we are having a lot of issues on I-39 and the Highway 10 area,” Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas said.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says black ice is a thin layer of highly transparent ice that forms as melting snow refreezes on roads and bridges.

It usually forms overnight and in the early morning as pavement temperatures drop.

But, with the sub-zero weather it can form anytime.

Additionally, the rock salt typically used by road crews is less effective in the extreme cold.
