RHINELANDER (WAOW) — Drs. Foster and Smith, based in Rhinelander, is closing, parent company Petco announced Wednesday.

The closure means 289 employees will be out of a job when the company closes on Feb. 12, according to the news release.

“Taking into account the needs of modern pet parents, shifting consumer preferences and the ongoing evolution of the Petco brand, we believe this will enable us to streamline operations and better focus on our core business and customer,” the statement said.

Petco bought the Northwoods business in 2015.

Petco’s Live Aquaria business, including 59 employees, will remain operational in Rhinelander.
