Speaker Ryan begins farewell tour as term in House comes to a close

JANESVILLE (WKOW) — Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, House Speaker Paul Ryan will take part in a week-long series of events that will attempt to underscore his legacy, culminating with an official farewell address next Wednesday at the Library of Congress.

Ryan is slated to receive two notable awards, on two issues he has worked to champion as speaker: a strong military and a strong economy, according to a news release.

Ryan’s official portrait as House Budget Committee chairman will also finally be released, capping the speaker’s 20 years in the House of Representatives.

Wednesday, Nov. 28

3:45 p.m. In a ceremony at the Pentagon, Defense Secretary James Mattis will present Speaker Ryan with the Department of Defense’s Distinguished Public Service Award. This award, a significant honor, will recognize the speaker’s commitment to rebuilding the U.S. Military. It is the highest award presented by the Secretary of Defense, to a private citizen, politician, non-career federal employee, or foreign national. Previous recipients include George W. Bush, Ash Carter, Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger, Barack Obama, and Bob Hope.

Thursday, Nov. 29

9 a.m. Speaker Ryan will take part in a Washington Post Live event with senior congressional correspondent Paul Kane.

Noon Speaker Ryan will deliver remarks on the House floor to thank the people of Wisconsin’s First District and his district staff.

6 p.m. Speaker Ryan will attend the unveiling of his Budget Committee Chairman portrait in the Rayburn Room of the Capitol.

Monday, Dec. 3

5:30 p.m. Speaker Ryan will deliver remarks at the Hudson Institute’s 2018 Award Gala in New York City, where he will receive the Herman Kahn Award for his commitment to pro-growth economic policies. Previous recipients include Mike Pence, Benjamin Netanyahu, Shinzo Abe, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, and Dick Cheney.

Wednesday, Dec. 19

Noon. Speaker Ryan will deliver his farewell address in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress, the same setting as his Confident America address given in December of 2015 shortly after becoming speaker.
