Portage County Crime Stoppers: Spider-Man bandit

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) — The search is on for a Spider-Man bandit in Stevens Point who pried open a business’ door, left for a time and then came back to rummage through some gaming machines looking for cash.

It happened at the Final Score Tavern on Maria Drive early on Sept. 17.

“Surveillance cameras capture the thief wearing a Spider-Man mask,” Stevens Point Police Sgt. Tony Zblewski said. “He showed up and cut the wires on a utility meter, apparently thinking he cut power to the building. He then removed a light bulb in an outdoor seating area and pried open the rear door. After taking a look inside, he left for about 20 minutes.”

Investigators believe the thief was wary that security alarms had been tripped. When he realized police were not rushing to the scene, he ventured back into the bar.

“He re-entered through the back door and pried open gaming machines and tried to get into an ATM,” Zblewski said. “He got away with an undetermined amount of cash and caused about $1,000 in damage to the business.”

Evidence indicates the Spider-Man bandit arrived about 3:30 a.m. and he fled with stolen cash about 5 a.m., the investigator said.

It is unclear if this break-in and theft is related to other recent burglaries in the area.
