Dillard’s may buy several Boston Store properties in Milwaukee area

Another big department store chain could be replacing some Boston Store locations in the Milwaukee area.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting Dillard’s, an Arkansas-based department store chain, might buy Boston Store properties at Brookfield Square, Mayfair Mall and Southridge Mall.

"It would be a shot in the arm that they could really use," BizTimes Milwaukee editor Andrew Weiland said.

Weiland said malls can’t always compete with online shopping and need solid anchor stores instead of empty buildings.

"I think the immediate question any mall owner has, when you lose a store, obviously, and a big store is, ‘How are we going to fill the space?’" Weiland said.

With the closest Dillard’s 200 miles away in Davenport, Iowa, not everyone here knows the name.

Experts say it’s a fit that could work.

"If there is a department store chain such as Dillard’s that sees our market as one they want to expand into, they’re not here right now, this may be an opportunity for them to come and grow their business," Weiland said.

WISN, our sister station, contacted a Dillard’s spokesperson, who declined to comment on the report.
