Accused drunken driver goes wrong way on ramp, almost hits deputy

An accused drunken driver was seen on dash camera video going the wrong way on a ramp and nearly hitting a Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle.

It happened early Friday morning on the Interstate 94 westbound offramp at Highway 100.

The driver had just done a U-turn and was heading the wrong way on the ramp back toward freeway traffic.

The driver stopped when he spotted the deputy who began driving back and forth to warn other drivers of the danger.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as 24-year-old Federico Barrionuevo-Martinez of Chicago.

Deputies arrested Martinez after he failed sobriety tests and blew a 0.21. Only then did he seem concerned about his behavior.

"What does this count as, in terms of my record?" Barrionuevo-Martinez is heard on the video asking.

"It’s very frustrating because people have options," Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt said.

Schmidt said Tuesday that the department is closing in on 500 arrests this year for driving under the influence of alcohol of drugs.

"The big issue here, when we have intoxicated drivers, (is) they literally do things that prove they’re intoxicated. They’ll drive the wrong way. They’ll turn around on ramps. They put people’s lives in danger," Schmidt said.

That driver was charged Tuesday with recklessly endangering safety and first offense drunken driving.

He will make his first court appearance Wednesday.
