Antigo gunman, 18, rode bike to prom before wounding two teens

ANTIGO (WAOW) – The teenage gunman who wounded two teens at the Antigo High School prom rode a bicycle to the school, carrying a rifle, Police Chief Eric Roller said Monday.

Jakob E. Wagner, 18, graduated from the school a year ago, authorities said at a 30-minute news conference.

Roller said Saturday night’s shooting occurred as Wagner confronted, in "close proximity,’ a couple leaving the prom and a police officer was "fairly close" in the parking lot.

"I think it was an excellent response because we were right there," the police chief said.

One officer fired an undetermined number of shots in taking down Wagner, Roller said.

The rifle Wagner had is common in Wisconsin, the police chief said. "I do not know where he got the gun."

Lives were saved because Wagner was stopped before he could get into the school, where 200 couples had signed up to attend the prom, Roller said.

The prom-goer seriously wounded was from Antigo and his date, who suffered a graze wound to her leg, did not attend the school, Roller said.

Two students behind the couple helped provide medical aid, including applying pressure to the serious wound, Roller said.

Asked whether Wagner left behind any notes, Roller declined comment. No motive for the shooting was given.

Because of the shooting, the sheriff in Langlade County said security plans for upcoming proms in Elco and White Lake will be reviewed and a deputy will be at the events.
