Police: Man who died in Wisconsin house fire was intruder

Eau Claire (WQOW) – The person killed in a house fire over the weekend in Eau Claire was an intruder and not known to those who lived there.

According to Eau Claire police, authorities were notified of a house fire at 4:12 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Congress Street. The callers said the house was on fire and there was an intruder inside.

Police say a tenant saw the intruder and a fight ensued. The tenant alerted everyone else of the fire and they were able to make it out.

The intruder, however, did not make it out of the home.

That person is identified as Jaime Thayer-Vega, 21. An autopsy showed Thayer-Vega died from smoke inhalation. Police said nobody in the home knew who Thayer-Vega was.

Police say the cause of the fire is not known at his time.

Police did not say why Thayer-Vega was in the home, or why he was not able to make it out alive.
