WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- According to the Wausau Police Department, there have been more fatal overdoses this year than all of 2020.
So far, there have been 21 overdoses and 6 fatalities.
There were only 5 fatalities all of last year.
Police officials say, nearly all the deaths have involved heroin.
"It takes people reaching out for help and you know we're here for more than just taking people to jail. We're hear to enhance quality of life and I say that if individuals are struggling with addiction they can call us," said Capt. Ben Graham, Wausau Police Department.
Police say in 2021, the average age of someone who overdoses is 29 years old.
Which is why they're putting an emphasis on prevention measures geared toward young adults.
