WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — Wausau officially has a new fire chief.
Robert Barteck was appointed the new chief during a Police and Fire Commission meeting Tuesday morning, the sole item on the agenda.
He credits his dad with the desire to keep the firefighter tradition alive in his family.
"Where we lived in Owen, [the fire station] was kiddy-corner to the backyard so my dad would literally run out of the back door of the house to meet the need of somebody in the community when they called for help. I watched that happen and it became infused in my DNA. I'm very proud of him," Barteck said.
After Barteck gave some remarks to the Commission, Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg told them, "I think you guys have just made the best decision for Wausau."
Barteck comes to this position after the former chief, Tracey Kujawa, retired in April.
Chief Barteck will begin his new duties immediately.
This is a developing story.
