(WAOW) – Wausau’s downtown will soon look different, with the demolition of the Wausau Center mall.
And that demolition will start Monday, May 17. That’s when fences will start going up around the eight blocks the mall spans.
The first area to come down will be the old Sears building, near Washington Street and 5th Street, according to the Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce. Demolition then will move west throughout the summer, toward the old JC Penney building.
Parts of Washington Street will be closed, as crews bring in equipment and materials.
The Chamber says most of the work will take place during the evening, from 7:30 p.m. to about midnight.
Meanwhile, HOM Furniture and two parking ramps will remain; they will be open during all phases of redevelopment.
