WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau’s Common Council has approved an extension of the city’s masking resolution through May 31st.
The resolution extension was narrowly passed by the Public Health and Safety Committee the week prior. Concerns around the extension in committee focused on the lack of consequences in the resolution and some public opposition to any mask mandate.
The extension passed the Common Council on a 7-3 vote after a few minutes of discussion from Alders. Those in favor of the resolution mentioned extending it to May gives the City a better idea of how increasing vaccinations will impact the area’s case burden.
A statewide mask mandate has been in place in Wisconsin by Governor Tony Evers since July of 2020. It is currently set to expire on April 5th with no word from the Governor’s office on if it will be extended.
