WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — Every Monday, News 9 honors an area educator making a difference in their community.

This week it's Megan Derfus, a second grade teacher at John Marshall Elementary School. The person who nominated Megan says:

Megan is always positive and encouraging and the kids love her. With no in person classes, many kids have missed out on class pets. So, Megan invented a virtual class pet: a cat named Snowy.

The students chose the animal, and worked together to name it. Each week, a different student gets to write about their adventures with Snowy, and draw pictures of them with Snowy. The kids look forward to it every week.

Megan is truly making a difference in the lives of her students.
