WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- Grant Elementary was named a local historic landmark by the Wausau City Council on Tuesday night.
The school is one the first elementary schools in the city and has been around for over 100 years.
According to Linda Tryczak, the Wausau Historic Preservation Commission Chairperson, the school was one of the first in the area to teach deaf students.
Tryczak said the school has become like a landmark in the neighborhood.
"It's nice for the community and I know that the neighbors are very excited to keep the building as it is because it's been such a statue in the neighborhood," Tryczak said.
The historic landmark designation means that any alteration to the building will first have to be approved by the commission.
