MERRILL, Wis. (WAOW) -- Verizon's second annual "Backpack for Kids" program kicked off Saturday.

The cell phone company is giving 2,000 free backpacks with supplies to all school-age children.

Justin Burford, the TEAM Wireless - Verizon Vice President of Marketing, said they're proud to be able to help as the school year approaches.

"Every year, even in an ordinary year, these supplies are in demand and needed with everything that goes on with a normal school year," said Burford. "This year, especially with the challenges our communities face, we really wanted to help out in this small way so they have one less thing to worry about going into this school year."

The Verizon store in Merrill still had several backpacks available as of today.
