Wausau School Board Urges WASB to retire Native American Mascots in Wisconsin
WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- The Wausau School Board passed a resolution on Monday urging the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) to support legislation to retire Native American Mascots across the Badger State.
The resolution says the symbols, images and nicknames are offensive and are a form of discrimination, oppression and racism.
While there are not any Native American mascots at Wausau schools, the resolutions says that students in the district could be exposed to these mascots at scholastic and athletic events.
More districts are expected to pass similar resolutions.
