WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -- A Schofield man has been charged with an 8th OWI after he crashed his vehicle into a snowbank near Indianhead golf course in Mosinee.
Neal Callanan was found slumped over in his car after police were called to the scene Monday afternoon. Upon arrival, officers say they noticed an ignition lock device that appeared to have been tampered with. When they asked Callanan if he had anything to drink, and he responded by saying "too much."
Callanan required officer assistance to get out of the vehicle and retrieve his ID. Officers say he appeared confused and then began urinating along the side of the road.
The 52-year-old then failed two sobriety tests and was arrested. It's unclear what his BAC was at the time of the arrest, but a blood draw is pending.
His first OWI occurred in Massachusetts in 1991. Subsequent offenses occurred in St. Croix, Dunn, Marathon, and Jackson counties from 2003 to 2016.
He returns to Marathon County court on Friday for a status conference. A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday, February 26th.
