WI bill takes away local control over farm expansions

MADISON (WQOW) - State lawmakers plan to vote next week on a series of farm bills including one that would give the government more of a say over large livestock facility expansions.

The bill would streamline the process for approving or denying permits for large livestock facilities by shifting the responsibility of approving expansions away from local government to the state's agriculture department.

The bill would also require any future changes to farm siting laws to be approved by a nine-person panel with five of the seats appointed by farm groups.

Some lawmakers have criticized the move because they claim it takes away the public's ability to have a say in the process.

The Assembly will take up the measure Thursday.
