WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- The 7th congressional district primary is just a week away. News 9 is sitting down with the candidates to talk about important issues right here in North Central Wisconsin.

Wausau School Board President and Associate Justice of the Ho-Chunk Supreme Court Tricia Zunker, shared her views heading into election day.

Zunker stressed the need to protect and support Wisconsin farmers by ensuring access to competitive markets and "eliminate predatory business practices that hurt our small and mid-size farmers."

When it comes to gun control, Zunker said that she supports the Second Amendment, but would like to see more done to prevent gun violence.

"As a mom, as a school board president I see our children go through active shooter drills," she said. "We need to address the gun violence problem in this country, we do. We need to have universal background checks, we need to have common sense gun legislation.

In order to make health care more affordable for Wisconsinites, Zunker said pharmaceutical companies need to be challenged.

Zunker also wants voters to know how she approaches decisions.

"It's with three principles in mind," she said. "Number one: compassion. Is this the compassionate response? Number two: equality. Does this legislation protect everyone equally? And number three: opportunity. Does this result in the most equitable and inclusive opportunity for people to have a chance at success?"

News 9 already sat down with Republican Tom Tiffany. And you can expect to hear from the other Republican candidate, Jason Church, on Thursday.

News 9 did reach out to Democratic candidate Lawrence Dale, who said he was unable to make it.

The special election primary will take place with the Spring Primary on Feb. 18. Also on that ballot is the State Supreme Court race as well as local races.
