Officials continue to investigate a Thursday officer-involved death in Wausau, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

In a press release issued Friday, officials say Wausau police and Marathon County sheriffs responded to the area of Artic Lane and North 12th Avenue after a report of a person attempting to steal vehicles.

Officials confronted the armed suspect, who "fired at law enforcement and a citizen's vehicle," the release said. Officials returned fire, striking the suspect, who "fell to the ground and remained armed," it adds.

The release then says the suspect "did not comply with continued orders" and aimed at officials before police shot the suspect again. Per the release, the suspect died at the scene.

No officials were harmed during the incident, per the release; however, it adds that the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

The incident is still under investigation, the release said, adding that anyone with recordings of the incident call the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation at 608-266-1671 so investigators can review the footage.
