Newman football falls short in 8-Player State Championship

The Newman Catholic football team looked to take home their first golden ball and state championship today.

Unfortunately for Newman, the Fighting Cardinals fell 42-27 to Luck this afternoon in Chippewa Falls.

Luck dominated early in the game today, a big thanks to running back Levi Jensen. Jensen ran for the first three touchdowns of the game: a 55-yard, a 72-yard, and then a 98-yard run to give Luck a 22-0 lead.

Newman finally got on the board before the end of the first quarter: a 36-yard touchdown pass to Joe Stephan put the score at 22-7.

Newman would then cut the deficit to 22-14 in the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run by Stephan.

But, another Luck touchdown would put the score at 28-14 heading into halftime.

Luck would score again to start the third: a 43-yard touchdown run by Bennett Jensen put Luck up 34-14.

Newman would then answer with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Ben Bates to Dylan Ackermann. Newman still trailing 34-21.

Newman would get on the board one more time with a 1-yard run by Ben Bates, but it ultimately wouldn’t be enough as Luck went on to win.
