STEVENS POINT, Wis (WAOW)– The Stevens Point Fire Department is conducting its annual coat drive for children in the area school district.
‘Operation Warm’ has been going on since 2015 and gives children in need a brand new winter coat. The coats go to kids in 4K through sixth grade.
This year there are 294 requests. The department has already received close to $3,000 in donations, with a goal of $8,000 so extra coats can be purchased to keep on hand during the later winter months.
A local family is matching every donation made up to $5,000.
“We go out to the schools and actually hand out these coats to the students and to give them something new, a brand new coat like that they really light up and to get the feedback from the teachers and the school workers that just tell us after we’ve left just how happy they are with their new coats its definitely rewarding, it’s worth all the time we put in to it,” said Matt Zander who is a firefighter and paramedic with the Stevens Point Fire Department.
