STEVENS POINT, Wis (WAOW)– The historic Fox Theater in downtown Stevens Point could be sold to the city for $1.
The city had previously issued a raze or repair order to the theater, but after going through their options the group that owns the theater decided they wouldn’t be able to repair the building.
“We had multiple engineers tell us that that roof will likely not survive another Wisconsin winter, if that roof collapses what happens is that it pushes out and if it pushes out we run potential risk of damaging the buildings on either side of it,” said Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza.
Wiza added that there is hope to possibly save the front third of the building but they won’t what part if any of the structure is salvageable until the demolition process is started.
There will be a meeting on Monday November 11 of the planning commission and the redevelopment authority to approve or deny the sale of the building. If the sale is approved, the redevelopment authority would take over possession of the building.
