This weeks athlete of the week is Mosinee’s volleyball captain Paige Wicklund.
Wicklund has led the Indians to a perfect 6-0 start in conference play this season. Overall, Mosinee is 21-6 on their season.
Wicklund was First Team All Conference and WVCA All State Honorable Mention last year. She was playing middle blocker the past two years, but despite the success, she switched to an outside hitter this season.
“It’s been a little rough for her,” Mosinee Volleyball Head Coach Justin Jacobs said. “I think she thought it was going to be an easier transition. I think she expected she could come in and still do the same things, but it’s a whole different position with different nuances. It’s coming along now, but it took some times for her.”
It clearly is coming along as Wicklund has 184 kills and 147 digs so far this season. She also broke a Mosinee record last Saturday with 174 total career blocks.
“Last year, I was a middle, so that’s where I got the majority of my blocks, but this year I moved to outside hitter, so I didn’t think I’d get as many blocks, but surprisingly I have,” Wicklund said.
Volleyball isn’t the only sport she excels in though. Wicklund also plays basketball and softball.
“She’s always in the weight rooms,” Jacobs said. “She puts a ton of time in in the summer. She’s at everything. She does open gyms for us, basketball, they play summer league softball, but she excels at everything she does because of that. The effort that she puts into it, she gets the rewards from it, so it’s awesome to see.”
